ACADEMIC PROGRAM

Academic Program

Like religious studies departments elsewhere in the world, ICRS develops inter-disciplinary approaches from across the social sciences and humanities. ICRS doctoral faculty members from the three universities represent many different disciplines related to religious studies. As such, ICRS is in a position to accept students with very different research interests. Doctoral seminars are taught by professors from diverse academic and religious backgrounds. One of the goals of ICRS is to study religions by creating dialogue between people from diverse disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, political science, history, and philosophy but also particular religion-based disciplines such as theology, Quranic and Hadith studies, Christian ethics, and mysticism.

ICRS maintains a close relationship with the Master’s Program in Religious and Cross-Cultural studies (CRCS) at UGM, which was founded in the year 2000. Since CRCS offers its courses in English, the two programs also share courses. ICRS and CRCS share the Wednesday Forum, which hosts lectures and discussion series on issues in religious studies and has routinely been held weekly for more than a decade. They also share a specialized library in religious studies, located in the same area as the UGM Graduate School library, with on-line access to thousands of journals through the UGM electronic library. In addition, ICRS doctoral students are encouraged to make use of the libraries at UIN Sunan Kalijaga and UKDW.
