Nationality:  Indonesia

Originally from Cirebon, West Java, Usman works as a researcher at the research center for society and culture for 15 years. His core competence of research is religion and religious traditions. Before becoming a researcher, he worked as a translator from Arabic to Indonesian in several publishers, and became a staff of the Indonesian Mosque Council of DKI Jakarta Province (DMI DKI). He completed his undergraduate education at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University (UIN Jakarta), majoring in hadith and Qur’anic exegesis in 2001. Then in 2013 he continued his post-graduate education at CRCS-UGM and graduated in 2016. Being researcher is a challenge, because researchers need to work professionally by upholding scientific integrity, to collaborate with various stakeholders, and to engage with communities that are the object of research. Realizing the lack of engagement between the researchers and communities encouraged my determination to continue my education to the doctoral degree at ICRS (Indonesian Consortium for Religious Studies), Gadjah Mada University.

His research interest is on the study of indigenous communities facing globalization and Islamization.  Usman is also interested in the study of religious freedom, religious literacy, religious moderation, and interreligious dialogue.
